How to choose fabric for outdoor furniture

Fabric decides how the corner will look, how it will feel and how it will hold up over time. Four questions worth asking before you choose.

Fabric is the first thing you see and the first thing you touch. It sets the character of the corner, and how easy it will be to live with day to day. Before you fall for a pattern, it's worth pausing on four questions.

01 / Where will the piece stand

A spot in full sun, a covered balcony and a poolside are three different environments. Tell us how many hours of sun the spot gets, whether the piece is exposed to rain, and whether there is water or chlorine nearby. That tells us which fabrics to suggest.

02 / Who uses it

A home with children, pets or frequent guests needs a forgiving fabric. Mid tones and a weave with a little texture hide signs of use better than a very light, plain fabric.

A good fabric is one you never think about. You sit, you enjoy it, and that's it.

03 / A quiet base, cushions with character

For the piece itself, choose a shade you'll still love in a few years: sand, stone, olive or warm grey. Colour and pattern come in with the cushions, which are easy to swap when you want a refresh.

04 / See and touch before you decide

Colour looks different on a screen, in a room and in sunlight. Ask for fabric samples, place them where the piece will stand, and look at them in the morning and in the afternoon.
